- The Haute Route - The Haute Route is probably the most famous ski-tour in the world. Traditionally traversed from Chamonix to Zermatt then on to Saas Fee it passes through some of the finest high-alpine scenery in the Pennine Alps. It is a journey of nearly 150km and involves about 10,000m of ascent and descent. A competent ski-touring party should be able to complete the route to Zermatt in a week to ten days, unless bad weather strikes. The Haute Route was originally pioneered in the 1860s on foot. The first recorded attempt on skis was in 1903 but it was not until 1911 that the final obstacle, The Grand Combin, had been overcome. The traverse is not technically difficult, but it is a serious journey through the high mountains and should only be attempted by experienced mountaineers. On our 'Traverse of the Alps on Skis' we included a substantial part of the Haute Route in an East to West direction (Days 20-30) taking in the Allalinhorn 4027m above Saas Fee. Would I recommend it? Yes I would. Guide Book: The Haute Route - Chamonix Zermatt by Peter Cliff
